“Why do you make music?”
“Why do I make anything? Because I can.”
Beginner’s Mind is a new project of two long-time multidisciplinary collaborators based in Düsseldorf, Germany, who are enthusiastic about human expression, sound, and experimentation. One half of this project has neither musical training (whether formal or informal) nor any training in playing an instrument. The other half studied a bit of music-making on the internet and still learns to play piano, while also looking for bravery to use her voice again to sing. But that’s not the reason we named ourselves Beginner’s Mind.
As Suzuki Roshi once said: “In the beginner’s mind there are many possibilities, but in the expert’s there are few.” Beginner’s Mind means nourishing the endless curiosity about the world and the numerous possibilities within the reach of our hands – without judgement or fear of failure. It’s a call for coming back to childlike awe with Life and all its gifts. It’s an invitation to play with it – for no other reason than the fact that we are alive.
This album wasn’t supposed to be our debut. But it arose from the deep without being called for, and in the process of emerging, it changed us both – in a good way. We hope it will do the same for you.
Sontag Shogun x wild growing sky
in cloudy states broken yet harmonies
In November 2025, Sontag Shogun released a weird, beautiful, and full of life little album, featuring four versions of the same song and a coloring book. They made the stems available for people to play with it further.
So I decided to make a song. Then, it turned out that the song fit perfectly to a spontaneously made video by me and Tomek Kowalski.
“Maybe that’s what a song is at its core — a beautiful expression of a moment to be passed around, through different filters and contexts and interpretations. Maybe a song is a developing story, expressed in sound over time.” (Ian Temple, Sontag Shogun’s member and a friend of mine, reflecting on the process of making “in cloudy states”)

first tracks I ever composed, made in 2025 for the documentary series “Autumn dialogues about aikido” – now remade, using what I’ve learned over the past year.

… more coming up, sometime in the future.
