The river flows steadily on
as this side of the marvelous rock I’m sitting on
slowly turns away from the nuclear reactor in the sky
and towards the vast, dark emptiness between me and my origin.
Projecting the darkness that’s inside me
onto the great mirror of the sky.
I’m alive.
Everything that’s important is already here.
It has been waiting for billions of years to meet me.
Just as I have waited.
Right here, right now –
the city flows by, against the backdrop of my body.
People move around as if with a purpose.
Each passing car, bike, and boat,
each crow, insect, and fish,
each gust of wind –
a kiss of the Universe
that has never happened before and will never happen again.
Dusk comes quickly these days.
Life doesn’t stop.
But if this should be my last night on this Earth
I’d say
it has been enough.
